Apocalyptica was formed in 1993[2] when four cellists, Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen gathered to play Metallica covers at the Teatro Heavy Metal Club. Among the audience was Kari Hynninen, who worked for the independent label Zen Garden Records. After listening to Apocalyptica's set, Kari Hynninen signed them on the spot to Zen Garden Records.
Apocalyptica is a Finnish band, whose members (Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Perttu Kivilaakso) were trained as classical cellists at the prestigious Sibelius Academy. Unwilling to be stifled, to be relegated to playing classical pieces simply bacuse it is the norm, they sought to break free of the stereotypes associated with both classical and heavy metal music and merge the two into a hybrid form.

Apocalyptica - S.O.S. (Anything but love) [ MAXI-CD (2 track)] It was hinted at in the past that the permanent integration of a drummer would change the music of Apocalyptica. And indeed: on "Worlds collide", the drums are more present than ever before. Yet, if you now think that the Finnish cello virtuosos would be on their way to musical triviality with conventional ingredients of a Classic Rock band, you're proven wrong. By the always present rhythms, the arrangements give new freedom to Eicca, Paavo and Perttu that often result in fascinating sound experiments. The first single, e.g., "I'm not Jesus", in which Slipknot/Stone Sour frontman delivers an outstanding performance on the mic, has an almost Nine Inch Nail-kind of flair ... if you'd always recognize that it is Apocalyptica performing here. Also the list of guest musicians on "Worlds collide" is interesting: Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) and Mats Leven (Therion).
