Aphrodite was very protective of her son, Aeneas, who fought in the Trojan War. Diomedes almost killed Aeneas in battle but Aphrodite saved him. Diomedes wounded Aphrodite and she dropped her son, fleeing to Mt. Olympus. Aeneas was then enveloped in a cloud by Apollo, who took him to Pergamos, a sacred spot in Troy. Artemis healed Aeneas there.

In honor of Adonis, Aphrodite founded a funeral cult, which was celebrated each spring by Syrian women, and it spread throughout the ancient world. Seeds were planted in vases and carefully watered with warm water. These plants quickly sprouted, but died soon; they were known as "gardens of Adonis."

Aphrodite's black form and warrior-aspect are best understood as vestiges of her one-time role as a terrrible goddess, long since suppressed in her popular cult. Both features would appear to reflect the goddess' original identification with the planet Venus.

It is alleged that Aphrodite sparked the Trojan War when she promised the hand of Helen to Paris in order to win the contest of beauty on Mount Ida. Paris' abduction of Helen brought about the war.

Marriage for upper class women in ancient Greece wasn't so much about the love, and this was just as true for Aphrodite. When Hephaestus got mad at his mommy, Hera, for throwing him off Olympus and crippling him, he tricked her into imprisonment in a golden throne. Zeus, the dutiful husband, offered up his ward Aphrodite to whoever let Hera out. Aphrodite was pretty sure Ares would be able to do it (he wasn't). When Hephaestus came back and released her himself, she was stuck with him. Sort of.
