Aphrodite: Goddess
built 636 days ago
Burkert points out that Aphrodite has numerous characteristics in common with Ishtar. Both are depicted as goddesses of love and associated with rites of prostitution, for example.19 Aphrodite, like Ishtar, was represented as armed and invoked to guarantee victory. Aphrodite's beard recalls that elsewhere ascribed to Ishtar.

Love brought by Aphrodite is powerful, passionate and affirming. It is not the weak and insecure love that demands you abandon parts of yourself. The Goddess in Her aspect of Aphrodite is an empowering Goddess.
Often the punishments rendered by the goddess Aphrodite, though severe, held important lessons embedded within them. These were lessons that sparked growth and ultimately improved the life or extended the vision of the person she was punishing, as in the case of Psyche.

All the gods and goddesses are fairly closely related but Aphrodite has no true sisters or brothers. There are many half-sisters and brothers depending on who you take her parents to be. Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite act like sisters.

Psychologically, Aphrodite belongs to the category of ‘virgin’ goddess in that she does not suffer at the hand of any man. Furthermore, although she is relationship-oriented, she possesses the quality of autonomy unlike her ‘vulnerable’ goddess sisters. Her consciousness is both focused and diffuse.
