Vivaldi was born on 4th March 1678 in Venice, Italy; his father was Giovanni Battista, a barber before becoming a professional violinist, who taught his son to play violin; they subsequently toured Venice playing violin together. Vivaldi suffered from asthma; this did not... prevent him from learning to play the violin, composing and taking part in the prescribed musical activities.

Details regarding Vivaldi's early life are few. His father was a violinist in the Cathedral of Venice's orchestra and probably Antonio's first teacher. There is much speculation about other teachers, such as Corelli, but no evidence to support this.
