Antonio Salieri: La Scala
built 634 days ago
Salieri's health declined in his later years, and he was hospitalized shortly before his death. It was shortly after he died that gossip first spread that he had confessed to Mozart's murder on his deathbed. Salieri's two nurses, Gottlieb Parsko and Georg Rosenberg, as well as his family doctor Joseph Röhrig, attested that he never said any such thing. At least one of these three people was with him throughout his hospitalization.

[H]ow did Mozart die if Salieri didn't kill him? Historians and modern physicians have concluded that Mozart died from a sudden attack of rheumatic fever which he often suffered as a child. The previous fevers had weakened Mozart's heart and by the last and fatal attack Mozart's heart failed. Certainly Mozart dying of heart failure is much less interesting and dramatic as Salieri driving him to death or being poisoned maliciously by a fellow rival.

Salieri was buried in the Matzleinsdorfer Friedhof (his remains were later transferred to the Zentralfriedhof) in Vienna, Austria. At his funeral service his own Requiem in C minor - composed in 1804 - was performed for the first time. His monument is adorned by a poem written by Joseph Weigl, one of his pupils:

Fueled by the memory of his dead father, Leopold (Roy Dotrice), Mozart is contacted by a wealthy patron who is actually Salieri in the purposefully masked disguise once worn by Mozart's father. With his marriage to Constanze (Elizabeth Berridge) falling apart and his health failing from constant composition, performance and substance abuse, Mozart receives his anonymous patron's commission to produce a requiem, poetically enough. In so doing he dies and is laid to rest in a pauper's grave, all at Salieri' insistence who lives through the rest of days with the guilt of his actions and the pain of knowing his worth will permanently stand in the shadows of greatness.
