Antonio Salieri: Emperor Joseph Ii
built 634 days ago
Antonio Salieri, court composer to the Emperor Joseph II, is a prolific young man at the Hapsburg court. Leading a virtuous life, he expects God to grant him fame. A bargain centered on the one and only thing that makes life worth living: music. It is the idea of an absolute upon which the composer has erected his existence. Take away the music and the man will fall.

A favorite sequence of scenes is when Mozart is welcomed by Emperor Joseph II, who is struggling to play the welcome song written by Antonio Salieri, in honor of the occasion. After pleasantries, Mozart sits down and plays Salieri's march to prove to the Emperor that he had it in his memory after hearing it one time. He then proceeds to add improvements to the march, winding up with a much better piece than originally written.

In 1774, after Gassmann's death, Salieri was appointed court composer by Emperor Joseph II. He met his wife, Therese von Helferstorfer in 1774, her father was opposed to the marriage as he felt Salieri didn’t earn enough, he only made 100 ducats a year as court composer. Emperor Joseph II on hearing about Salieri’s situation increased his annual stipend to 300 ducats, Salieri had to take over some of the aging Kapellmeister Bonno’s duties. In 1774 Salieri and Therese married and went on to have eight children.
