As the ‘hottest’ round of the FIA Formula One World Championship approaches, Jaguar Racing drivers Mark Webber (26) and Antonio Pizzonia (22) have been undertaking acclimatisation exercises on the island of Langkawi, near Malaysia. The Malaysian Grand Prix is widely regarded as one of the most unforgiving races on the Formula One calendar when it comes to the demands of heat and humidity – a challenge that faces both man and machine at Sepang. Meanwhile, Jaguar Racing’s preparations back at its Milton Keynes headquarters (UK) have been firmly focused on understanding the reasons behind the retirements of Mark and Antonio at last weekend’s Australian Grand Prix. At the time, suspension failure was suspected as the reason behind both retirements but upon examination this week at the factory, the cause has actually been diagnosed to a component in the drive shaft. Corrective action has subsequently been taken and the team expects no further repeat of the problem which, in Mark’s case, forced him to retire from fifth place as he was pulling away from eventual race winner David Coulthard (McLaren-Mercedes).

Rocketsports driver Antonio Pizzonia is a prime example of that, the Brazilian began his racing career behind the wheel of a go-kart. He won his first karting championship at the age of 10. Growing up in the Amazon, he traveled long distances from his home to compete in temporary parking lot tracks in Brazil. Hooked at a young age, Antonio was introduced to karting when a friend of the family gave him a go-kart for his ninth birthday.

At Rocketsports, ex-F1 driver Antonio Pizzonia joins recent arrival Mario Dominguez. Pizzonia raced for Rocketsports at the season opener in Long Beach, and returned for the Montreal race, where he led two laps. Finally, German driver Andreas Wirth will make his Champ Car debut at Surfers in a Dale Coyne car. Wirth finished the just-completed Champ Car Atlantic series in third, behind champion Simon Pagenaud and runner-up Graham Rahal.

Antonio Pizzonia led the 2000 Championship from the very begining. He maintained the pace he showed in pre-season testing and delivered Manor Motorsport's second title in fine style. Never seriously challenged for the lead of the Championship, the young Brazilian dealt with threats from season long rivals Tomas Scheckter and Takuma Sato with consistent podium finishes and devastating pace.

A week ago Antonio Pizzonia was rather keen to get out his Williams contract and get on with his racing career. Frustrated that the team picked Nick Heidfeld this year (as a sop to BMW) Pizzonia has sat around all year waiting for the deal to end and with Williams giving tests to Nico Rosberg, Pizzonia seemed to be on his way to a new career in the United States. But then came Monza. Nick Heidfeld had had a crash in testing the previous week but reckoned that he was healthy enough drive. That was not the case and on Saturday morning Heidfeld pulled out. Pizzonia jumped in and did a brilliant job to score points for the team on Sunday afternoon.
