Symantec, which makes Norton security products, dominates the antivirus market. McAfee is a distant second, with a share of 13 percent. McAfee VirusScan Plus 2008 (*est. $25) has only been reviewed by CNet.com so far. Reviewer Robert Vamosi says, "McAfee VirusScan 2008 looks and feels like warmed-over last year's product." Considering that McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 fared poorly in most professional reviews and earned more consumer ire (according to user reviews) than any other program, Vamosi's observation cannot be considered praise.

AutoProtect is automatically enabled in this version of the installer, and it cannot be disabled as in past versions of Norton AntiVirus. Also absent are the QuickMenu and the AntiVirus prefpane in System Preferences. If you want these features and you are using Mac OS X 10.3, you may download and install NAV 9. (The AutoProtect feature of NAV 9 is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.4; ... NAV 9 can be used with AutoProtect disabled.)

This agreement allows for the installation of Norton Antivirus on all University-owned desktop and laptop machines. Unfortunately, this licensing agreement does not provide for home use.

License: Symantec Client Security and Norton AntiVirus can be installed on any university-owned computer, and on home computers owned by registered students or by currently employed staff and faculty. You can only use Symantec Client Security or Norton AntiVirus while you are a registered student or current faculty or staff member. If your affiliation with Cornell ends, you must remove this software from any computers you own.

When purchasing antivirus software, the agreement may include a clause that your subscription will be automatically renewed, and your credit card automatically billed at the renewal time without your approval. For example, McAfee requires one to unsubscribe at least 60 days before the expiration of the present subscription.[4] In that case, the subscriber may contest the charges with the credit card issuer, but this recourse is likely to fail if in fact the subscriber had authorised such a "continuous payment authority".
