Antigone Rising is an all-women rock band with members from New Jersey and Long Island, New York, USA. Their music is influenced by classic rock from the 1970s such as Led Zeppelin, mixed with pop overtones and at times folk and country elements. They originally formed at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA) in the late 1980s, with sisters Cathy (guitar) and Kristen Henderson (drums) as the primary force, and Penelope "Peppy" Kokines taking lead vocals. Later members would include Sue Obolsky (lead vocals), Agona Hardison (lead vocals), Terri Avella (bass) and Ann-Marie Stehn (bass). In the mid-1990s in New York City, the Henderson sisters re-grouped and started playing gigs (initially in Bleecker Street venues including The Back Fence, Cafe Figaro and The Bitter End) with lead vocalist Cassidy, a self-taught singer who had previously sung in church and with a high school girl band, Jen Zielenbach on bass and Dena Tauriello on drums. They are the current lineup of Antigone Rising, which now reportedly performs 200 or more shows per year.

Antigone Rising is a NYC-based band comprised of five women who are well-acquainted with both extremes of the music industry spectrum. For many years starting in the mid-90's they toured the countryside in their van as an unsigned band selling self-released CD's in ever-increasing numbers. Originally formed by guitar-playing sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson, drummer Dena Tauriello and lead singer Cassidy (just Cassidy) were added along the way, with the final piece of the puzzle being the addition of bass player Jen Zielenbach in 2004. After years of toiling in small clubs and traveling the open road in their well-worn van, the band was signed to Atlantic subsidiary Lava Records in 2003 and their star has continued in ascendance since that watermark event.

Lava Records recording artists Antigone Rising consists of lead singer Cassidy, guitarist sisters' Cathy and Kristen, bass by Jen, and drums by Dena. Fueled with energy overdrive, Cassidy took control of each song with her empowering vocals. They opened the hour long set with "Hello" which then led into songs including "Longshot," "She's Not Innocent," "Better," and "What?" Many fans were anxiously waiting to hear them perform their first release called "Don't Look Back", which they have performed on "The Tonight Show" and the "Today Show" with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer.

[I]n 2003, Antigone Rising released a second live album entitled Traveling Circus. A testament to their time spent on the road, the setlist was a departure from the band's earlier work. The band plays an average of 220 shows a year, and sharing bills with the likes of the North Mississippi All-Stars, Robert Randolph & The Family Band and moe. has helped them incorporate new musical ideas with each passing date. An amalgamation of folk, funk, jam, rock, blues and a whole lotta love can best describe their current sound, though it's constantly in flux.

Antigone Rising was founded in the late 90s by sibling guitarists Cathy and Kristen Henderson. The band ... features powerhouse vocalist Cassidy, Dena Tauriello on drums and Jen Zielenbach on bass. The five-piece ensemble's blend of 70s-era rock n'roll has taken them from playing small clubs up and down the eastern seaboard, to opening up for Aerosmith and former Black Crowes' Rich Robinson during the summer of 2004.
