The report ... noted that several SSRIs have been shown to be effective for treating depression in this population. ACNP appointed a special task force of the nation's leading scientists in the field to review the available research on the use of antidepressants and youth under 18 years of age.

Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP discusses antidepressants and alternative treatments for depression One specific recent tactic in recent use is the widespread promotion of antidepressants as a “safe” substitute for synthetic HRT. When the WHI studies on the dangers of HRT were published in 2001, about 13 million women were taking those drugs. Many of these women were put into a panic by the news about the health risks of HRT.
[One] group of antidepressants known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) is ... available. Drugs in this group include phenelzine (Nardil) and moclobemide (Manerix). MAOIs can have lots of interactions with other drugs and foods such as cheese, increasing the risk of side-effects. They are not commonly prescribed, but may be worth trying if other types of antidepressants have not worked.

If SSRIs are given with other antidepressants including MAOIs, tryptophan and lithium, there is a risk of serotonin syndrome developing. This is serious and potentially fatal. The symptoms are: hyperthermia (high temperature), tremor and convulsions (fits), agitation and muscle spasms.

SSRI antidepressants have been found to increase the risk of suicide. SSRI antidepressants are found to be no more effective than a sugar pill. In addition to that, all pharmaceutical drugs cause side effects ranging from mild to life-threatening.
Those patients taking antidepressants with the strongest affect on serotonin had a 2.6-fold higher risk of abnormal bleeding compared with those taking antidepressants with the lowest effect. Antidepressants with an intermediate effect nearly doubled the risk.
