Antibiotics can dangerously interfere with the anticoagulant medication warfarin (Coumadin®), making the blood too thin and increasing the risk of bleeding. Adjustments in the dose of warfarin may be required if antibiotics are started. Be sure to inform any physician prescribing antibiotics for you if you are taking warfarin.

In an accompanying JAMA editorial, it is noted that the finding is particularly worrisome as exposure to antibiotics is so prevalent, and often not necessary. Therefore, the risk could be substantial and largely preventable. They ... raise the question of whether the use of antibiotics is a risk factor for other cancers, and point to a need for further research to address this concern.

To minimize risk of adverse reactions and development of resistant strains of bacteria, antibiotics should be restricted to use in cases where there is either known or a reasonable presumption of bacterial infection. The use of antibiotics in viral infections is to be avoided. Avoid use of fluroquinolones for trivial infections.
