Antibiotics can be used to successfully treat illness because they can kill all of the harmful bacteria before resistance can evolve. But if everyone, even healthy people, took antibiotics all the time, bacteria would evolve to become resistant to these antibiotics.

Taking antibiotics when they are not needed can be harmful. Each time people take antibiotics, they are more likely to carry resistant germs in their noses and throats. Common antibiotics cannot kill these resistant germs. Your child may need antibiotics that are more costly, given by a needle, and/or administered in the hospital. Since OME will almost always get better on its own, it is better to wait and take antibiotics only when they are needed.

Allergic reactions to antibiotics are usually observed as skin rashes, but severe anemia (too few red blood cells), stomach disorders, and deafness can occasionally result. It was once thought that allergic reactions to antibioticspenicillin in particular were frequent and permanent. Later studies suggested... that many people outgrow their sensitivity or were never truly allergic. Since such a large number of antibiotics are available, in most casesallergy-causing drugs can be avoided.

People who receive antibiotics at home through an IV catheter are at increased risk of developing an infection at the site where the catheter is inserted and in the bloodstream. Pain, redness, and pus at the catheter insertion site, or chills and fever (even in the absence of problems at the insertion site) are signs that a catheter-related infection may have developed.
