Anthrax: United States
built 646 days ago
In 1990, Anthrax released the more serious Persistence of Time to even greater success than State of Euphoria. The album was considerably darker but much more technical and progressive than Anthrax's previous work. This made it a hit with metalheads who were afraid to embrace the band because of their "silly" side. The biggest single off the album was a cover of Joe Jackson's "Got The Time". Jackson himself even claimed that he enjoyed Anthrax's cover version of his song. The band's own original song "In My World" was ... extremely successful as a single, and "Belly of the Beast" was moderately successful, as well. The album was Anthrax's highest charting album ever.

Anthrax in humans is rare unless the spores are spread intentionally. Anthrax usually develops in cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. Historically, anthrax infections in North America occurred in people who worked with animals, such as veterinarians or ranchers. However, anthrax is now rare in animals in North America because of routine vaccination. In 2001, the general population became concerned after 22 cases of anthrax occurred in the United States as a result of bioterrorism. Most of those cases involved postal workers and media employees who were exposed to anthrax spores when handling mail.
Anthrax is a disease caused by the rod-shaped bacterium Bacillus anthracis, an endospore forming gram positive rod bacterium. The disease is ... known as Woolsorters' disease, ragpickers' disease and charbon. It is primarily found in hoofed animals with hides, such as goats, sheep, cattle and horses. Anthrax is found worldwide, although many Western countries have nearly eliminated the disease by vaccinating animals against the disease. The disease is spread to man by contact, on open wounds or internal membranes, with infected animal hides or meat . It is not spread from person to person by respiratory means, unlike many viruses. Usually humans acquire the disease by skin contact with the bacteria or by inhaling the bacterial spores found in sheep's wool. The bacterium forms hard-shelled endospores that may go into a kind of hibernation. The spore allows the anthrax bacterium to remain in a dormant state for years protected against the environment and to become reactivated when transferred to a favorable growth medium, such as a human or animal.
Anthrax is a well-known, ancient disease; the fifth plague visited upon the Egyptians in Genesis (see plagues of Egypt) resembles the disease. Pure cultures of the anthrax bacillus were obtained in 1876 by Robert Koch, who demonstrated the relationship of the microbe to the disease. Confirmation of the bacillus as the cause of anthrax was provided by Louis Pasteur, who ... developed a method of vaccinating sheep and cattle against the disease. Anthrax is now uncommon in the United States because of widespread vaccination of animals and disinfection of animal products such as hides and wool.

Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. These include South and Central America, southern and eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Middle East. When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products. Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products from other countries where anthrax is more common may become infected with B. anthracis (industrial anthrax). Anthrax in wild livestock has occurred in the United States.
Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by a bacteria called Bacillus anthracis. It is a disease most commonly seen in animals, especially hoofed animals such as cows, sheep, goats and horses. Humans occasionally become infected with anthrax when they eat meat or handle the wool, hair or bones of an animal infected with anthrax. There are 2000-5000 cases of anthrax worldwide, and about 5 cases a year in the United States. Experts believe that anthrax is among the diseases which could be used as a biological weapon.
