Qualifying round finals: Anthony Dupuis (France) def. Nathan Thompson (USA) 6-3, 7-5; Aisam Qureshi (Pakistan) def. Brendan Evans (USA) 7-6 (10-8), 6-3; Prakash Amritraj (India) def. Scott Lipsky (USA) 6-4, 6-3; Jesse Levine (USA) def. Nathan Healy (Australia) 6-3, 7-5.
Anthony Dupuis came into the final with a win over top seed Leander Paes, but yesterday he played a brand of tennis quite indistinguishable from the match against the Indian. The second seed Peter Tramacchi (Australia) didn't give him much of a chance to get into groove, as the Australian won the $ 50,000 IPCL Cup Challenger 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 to add 70 points and $ 7,200 to his kitty.
Srichaphan will... face stiff competition from Sjeng Schalken (Holland), Anthony Dupuis (France), and quite a few Spaniards. Besides Tommy Robredo, Felix Mantilla there is the young and promising Rafael Nadal from Spain. He is considered the future of Spanish tennis. Carlos Moya, the 1998 French Open Champion – another Spaniard – is feeling fit and good too. The last two times – in the year 1999 and 2000 – Moya was not very lucky. In the year 1999 he was forced to concede the quarterfinal owing to injury and the following year he was forced to pull out of the tournament even before hitting a ball.
In the final match of the afternoon, South Africa’s Wayne Ferreira disposed of Anthony Dupuis 6-2, 6-2, in just 64 minutes. Ferreira, an ATP tour veteran and Berkeley resident, is an assistant coach with the California men’s tennis team and grabbed the No. 5 seed in the tournament.
Dupuis began playing tennis at the age of nine with his father Xavier Dupuis. He said in an interview once that his favourite surfaces are clay and hard court. Since February 1998 he is being coached by Benoit Carelli. He credits his mentor with improving his physical and mental play.
