Anomie was a concept first defined by the french sociologist Emile Durkiehm. It is the idea that when people find themselves in rapidly changing social conditions they will lose the social guides to behavior. This leads to a state of normlessness and a lack of understanding of acceptable behaviors.

Resisting the Anomie is the second book of poetry by Kwame Dawes, whose collection Progeny of Air, won Britain's prestigious Forward Trust Poetry Prize for Best First Book in the fall of 1994. In Resisting the Anomie, Dawes takes as his subject the anxiety of being far from home, the unease of not belonging, the sense of disconnection from culture and custom.

Anomie can have constructive, but ... destructive effects: Anomie stimulates adaptation processes, innovation and creativity. However, anomie also leads to excessive demands and alienation, pessimism, distrust, and discontent. Visible symptoms on the individual level are: risky behavior, substance abuse, mental health disorders and violence (against oneself or against others). At the societal level one sees increased disintegration tendencies. Risks of instability, violent uprising, and conflict increase; phobias of all kinds can become more prevalent. Loss of orientation and failing systems of reference also cause people to turn to religious fundamentalism, or left or right extremist groups, which offer a foothold and orientation in challenging times.

Anomie refers to the lack or ineffectiveness of normative regulation in society. The concept was first introduced in sociology by Émile Durkheim (1893) in his study on the social dimensions of the division of labor. Contrary to Marx, Durkheim argued that the division of labor is not problematic as long as it is sufficiently regulated. However, under exceptional circumstances, Durkheim maintained, the division of labor will take on an anomic form, either because there is a lack of regulation or because the level of regulation does not match the degree of development of the division of labor. Durkheim saw such anomic forms present during periods of industrial crises, in the conflict between labor and capital, and in the lack of unity and excessive degree of specialization in the sciences.

After experiencing success in Santa Cruz, Anomie moved to San Francisco to expand their base. However, living in close quarters took its toll on the band, and they began to grow apart. After the last ill-fated show in June 1995, Jeremy had had enough. Due to personal strife within the band, and the alcohol problems of some members, Jeremy dissolved the band a month later. Jeremy and Darren later formed the band Faded, which continues the Anomie, and even performs many of Jeremy's songs that he wrote originally for Anomie.

Anomie ... refers to a breakdown of social norms and it a condition where norms no longer control the activities of members in society. Individuals cannot find their place in society without clear rules to help guide them. Changing conditions as well as adjustment of life leads to dissatisfaction, conflict, and deviance. He observed that social periods of disruption (economic depression, for instance) brought about greater anomie and higher rates of crime, suicide, and deviance.
