As the first round progressed, Annika seemed to have her nerves and adrenalin rush in check. She missed only one fairway and four greens. Her one over par 71 was a fait accomplit. Her respectable second round 74 left her short of making the cut. The experience was obviously draining and exhilarating at the same time.

In June of 2003, Annika won the McDonald’s LPGA Championship in her return to the women’s circuit. She tapped the ball in on the first hole of sudden death to defeat Grace Park and capture her fifth major in ten years. Within weeks, Mercedes-Benz showed its faith in Annika's abilities, extending its marketing deal with her through 2005.

Sorenstam has the best all-time Solheim Cup record at 20-9-3 and has won points 67 percent of the time. She is particularly adept at being a partner in the alternate shot format (10-2-1), although her singles record of 4-2-1 is not especially dominant. Sorenstam has struggled somewhat while playing her own ball with a partner, going 6-5-1 in four-ball matches.

A few weeks later, Annika brought home the crystal trophy in the Women’s British Open. She and Se Ri Pak matched each other shot for shot through the final round until the 18th hole. Pak drove it badly off the tee and flubbed her putt for par, allowing Annika to sink an eight-footer for the victory and the career Grand Slam.

Annika Sorenstam Sorenstam's round began on the back nine at Moon Valley Country Club with eight consecutive birdies before a par on the par-4 18th. She then made four straight birdies after the turn to stand 12-under through 13 holes.

Sorenstam was two ahead when she began her final round and missed a four- footer for par at the first. That would be the last mistake the top player in the world would make.
