Lorena Ochoa completed a runaway victory in her first tournament of the year, closing with a 4-under 68 to leave second-place finisher Annika Sorenstam 11 strokes behind Sunday at HSBC Women's Champions. Competing for the first time since winning the ADT Championship in November for her eighth 2006 victory, Ochoa earned $300,000 for her 18th career LPGA Tour title.
Lorena Ochoa kicked off her 2008 season with an 11-shot win over Annika Sorenstam at the HSBC Women's Champions tournament, strengthening her lead in the world rankings. Ochoa, the two-time reigning Player of the Year, now leads Sorenstam by 7.96 average points -- the same distance between Sorenstam and the 123rd-ranked player in the world. The win was Ochoa's 15th since April 2006.
The 25-year-old Mexican native had a stellar season in 2006 where she won a career-high six times on the LPGA Tour and ended Annika Sorenstam's five- year run. Last season, Ochoa ... captured the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average, was first on the money list with $2.5 million in earnings and collected the Associated Press Player of the Year Award along with the Rolex Player of the Year Award.
