Annie Get Your Gun [I]s a simple love story of a two-fisted girl shrewd enough to know that "you can't get a man with a gun," but damned if she'll bow to anything in pants when it comes to marksmanship. About a decade before Zilker Park became home to the summer musical, "Annie Get Your Gun" opened on Broadway. A star vehicle for the booming Ethel Merman, "Annie" tells the (true-ish) story of how Wild West Show star Annie Oakley meets and falls in love with fellow sharp-shooter Frank Butler. Bernadette Peters starred in a 1999 revival, which featured a revised (and politically updated) book by Peter Stone. The writer restructured the plot as a show within a show, a tired device that works surprisingly well here.
