Anne inherited a disastrous financial situation. She ... had to face a political crisis as many grandees who had fled the authoritarian rule of the previous government came back to France. The regent had to satisfy their pleas to return to some benefits while satisfying as well the demands of those who had served her late husband. The number of solicitors was simply too large for what the regent had to offer. A movement nicknamed the "cabal of the important" loudly voiced the indignation of its adherents. Anne reacted quickly by arresting its leader, the duke of Beaufort.

See 18.K4 - Franz Joseph succeeded his uncle Ferdinand (who had been forced to abdicate) as Emperor of Austria in 1848. Duchess Elizabeth was assassinated in Geneva by an Italian anarchist, Luigi Lucheni, who stabbed her with a shoemaker's file (some sources mentions it was a knife). Luigi was given a life sentence for the murder and committed suicide in his prison cell in 1910.

Sainte-Anne is a friendly town, with a good range of restaurants and cafes to explore. It is home to around 20,000 people and is located just 25 minutes east, along the coast from Pointe-a-Pitre. Sainte-Anne is renown for its magnificent beaches with pure white sands, one of the best being “La Plage de Bois Jolan”, just east of Sainte-Anne. There is ... the town beach, “La Plage du Bourg” overlooking the picturesque lagoon.

[Wormeley's translation of the Memoires ... includes a portrait of Anne, written and circulated in 1658 (and so surely seen by Anne). Unlike the Memoires, probably revised after Anne's death, the portrait gives Motteville's description of the living woman whom she had then served for 15 years. As in all of the pen-portraits of the day, praise is balanced with criticism, and some passages reveal as much of Motteville as of Anne:]
