Anne Murray: New Brunswick
built 655 days ago
Anne Murray's sales began to decline in the latter half of the '80s, primarily due to the shifting tastes of the country audience, who was beginning to seek out harder-edged, new traditionalist performers. Nevertheless, she maintained a dedicated following during the late '80s and '90s through her occasional recordings ("Feed This Fire" became a surprise Top Ten hit in the summer of 1990) and her concerts. ~ Tom Roland, All Music Guide

Anne has showed no signs of slowing down in the past decade. In 1996, she signed on with a new manager - legendary Bruce Allen, who ... manages the careers of Bryan Adams and Martina McBride. She recorded her first live album in 1997, and in 1999, she released WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, an inspirational album. This 26-song collection combines ageless hymns with tunes from the pop music world that have lifted the hearts of millions. Included on the album is the debut single "Let There Be Love", which Anne recorded with her daughter Dawn.

Murray grew up with five brothers and the only daughter of a physician James Carson Murray and his wife Marion Margaret, a trained nurse. She enjoyed pop and folk music while in high school and in 1964, when in her second year at the University of New Brunswick (where she received a degree in physical education), she auditioned for the CBC-TV show Singalong Jubilee. She didn't get the job, since there were enough altos in the cast, but co-host and associate producer Bill Langstroth tracked her down two years later and convinced her to join the show.

Murray had performed with some of them before, while others -- like Olivia Newton-John, who duets with Murray on "Cotton Jenny" -- were less familiar. "I'd only met her once, in a washroom at the Grammys, and we were just talking between stalls," Murray says. "But she was so well prepared for this song, and so together, (that) it was done in a flash."
