After learning that her boyfriend, a GI in Korea, has found someone else, Norah Larkin (Anne Baxter) impulsively agrees to meet womanizer Harry Prebble (Raymond Burr) for dinner. Norah allows herself to get drunk and accept Prebble's invitation to his apartment. When he tries to force himself on her, she hits him with a poker. Unfortunately, Prebble is found dead the next morning, and Norah, not even remembering how she got home, thinks that she killed him.

Anne Baxter, feeling despondent after having been left by her boyfriend, dines with the womanizer Raymond Burr. Later in the evening, after too many drinks, she ends up in Burr's apartment and must protect herself against his advances. The next thing she knows is that she wakes up in her bed with a headache in the morning.

The role of Eve Harrington is, of course, Anne Baxter's enduring legacy. In an ironic twist, Baxter appeared again on Broadway during the 70s, in Applause , the musical version of All About Eve , but finally in the "Margo Channing" role (she was replacing Lauren Bacall , who won a Tony Award in the role). Bette Davis tells, in one of her biographies, of attending one such performance by Baxter to their mutual delight.

There was an air of duplicity about Baxter that she and her directors used to diverse effect throughout her career. Her steely-eyed, intelligent beauty was composed of elements disparate enough to hint at complex or contradictory aspects of a character. Few of Baxter's roles were straightforward interpretations; her characters, more often than not, play other characters. The masks that Baxter's women wear may depict treachery (All about Eve), mental unbalance (Guest in the House), or a rugged, no nonsense exterior that disguises a vulnerable, tentative personality (Yellow Sky). Many of Hollywood's best directors found Baxter a surprisingly intense performer and she did first-rate work for Hitchcock, Welles, Wellman, Edmund Goulding, Negulesco, Milestone, and Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
