Anna Kournikova may be only 20 but she is already trying to make a comeback. Yesterday the Russian won her second match in seven tournaments, beating Marta Marrero 6-3, 6-3, but tonight she faces the world No1 Venus Williams in the Italian Open second round.

As the world's most famous and highest paid female athlete, Anna Kournikova is way more than a tennis player, or a pretty blonde. Anna has become an icon — symbolizing how modern society has come to find the sport more intriguing simply by its players. In this hip-hop, dare-to-be-different age, Anna has brought a completely new, and otherwise indifferent, audience to the sport of women's tennis — a lite version of the testosterone driven men's tennis tour. People long to see a glimpse of the girl whose striking beauty has her on the radar screen of both major corporations, and men from all over the world. So how did this Russian beauty, who is clearly not, by ranking, at the top of her field, but rather by her other qualities, turn herself into the athletic diva she is today?
Anna Kournikova Russian tennis star Anna Kournikova first discovered tennis when she was five years old. After six years of practice in her native Moscow, Russia, she became more serious about the sport and moved to Florida at age 11 to learn at famed tennis coach Nick Bollettieri's Tennis Academy. As her skills increased, she excelled on the junior circuit. Winning both the European Championships and Italian Open, she entered the pro ranks in 1996 as the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior World Champion.
Forget trying to win her first singles title, Anna Kournikova is just trying to win a match. Playing in her second tournament since February 2001, Kournikova once again lost in the first round, this time to the 85th ranked player in the world.
