built 224 days ago
Anna Kournikova played in the Federation Cup at age 14 and won her first professional title at 15. Her good looks and signature braided blonde ponytail made her a fan favorite and eventually an off-court star; People magazine named her one of the "50 Most Beautiful People" of 1998. In 1999 she won her first Grand Slam title, a doubles victory with Martina Hingis at the Australian Open. In 2000 the Web portal Lycos named her the Internet's most-searched athlete. In December 2004 it was widely reported, but not confirmed, that Kournikova had married pop singer Enrique Iglesias in Mexico.

Despite the pressures of teaming with the world's best player, Anna Kournikova was very successful alongside Hingis and became doubles world no. 1. However, as a result of the increased focus on her doubles career following the book's release, Kournikova's singles game slipped and she didn't win a tournament during this period.

A highlight for Anna was the Australian Open in 1999. Here she won her first Grand Slam Title for doubles with her friend Martina Hingis. Anna’s deal with Adidas seems to be a lucky one, for her as for Adidas as well. In the past, companies only have had interest in mens tennis. But after Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, the sisters Venus and Serena Williams and of course Anna Kournikova, they switched over. After all it’s big business.

Kournikova was a member of the Russian delegation to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1997, as a 16-year-old, she reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, where she lost to the eventual champion, Martina Hingis by a score of 6-3, 6-2. 1998 was her breakthrough year, when she broke into the WTA's top 20 rankings for the first time and scored impressive victories over Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, and Steffi Graf. Kournikova's two Grand Slam doubles titles came in 1999 and 2002, both at the Australian Open in the Women's Doubles event with partner Martina Hingis, with whom she played frequently starting in 1999.

In 1999, Kournikova teamed up with Martina Hingis to compete in the women's doubles at The Australian Open. Few who witnessed their quarter final match could have realised the monumental impact that this event would have on the world of literature. Sitting utterly engrossed in front of his television screen in Russia was Leo Tolstoy. The climax, where all the players exchanged kisses at the net inspired the great author. One year later, Anna Kournikova, an epic tale of one woman's love affair with her doubles partner hit the shelves. In real life, Kournikova and Hingis lost in the final, but in the book the power of love drives the pair to victory.

Her pro career has had its ups and downs, and after nagging back injuries Kournikova has all but given up professional tennis. After a promising start to her career, she never won a pro singles tournament but managed a consistent top-20 ranking. She did... excel on the doubles circuit. Frequently paired with Martina Hingis, the duo ranked number-one and took 16 doubles titles (including three Grand Slam events).
