After engaging in a lesbian kiss on the popular UK-based soap Brookside, Anna Friel was trumpeted as the next big thing -- a statement she cemented following appearances in popular movies such as Goal! and Rogue Trader.

Friel began acting as a teen in theater and made her television debut on the BBC series, In Their Shoes and followed up with appearances on other popular series such as Coronation Street and Emmerdale. She is most remembered for her role on the soap opera Brookside which she joined in 1993. Friel left the series in 1997 and made her film debut in the WWII drama The Land Girls which ... starred Rachel Weisz. She then appeared in the Russian film The stringer, The Tribe with Joely Richards and St. Ives. In 1999, she appeared as Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) alongside Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer. Other notable films include Rogue Trader, The Fear, Watermelon, Timeline, Perfect Strangers, and the title role in Bathory as the murderous Elizabeth Bathory.
In 1995 Friel made her first foray into the world of feature film with Stephen Poliakoff’s movie “The Tribe,” opposite Joely Richardson and Jeremy Northam. Other films followed, including “The Stringer,” “The Land Girls,” with Rachel Weisz and Catherine McCormack, “Rogue Trader,” starring alongside Ewan McGregor, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” with Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer, “Sunset Strip,” “Watermelon,” Barry Levinson’s “An Everlasting Piece,” “The War Bride,” for which she was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, the critically acclaimed “Me Without You,” and the time-travel adventure for Paramount, “Timeline,” alongside real-life partner David Thewlis, Paul Walker, Billy Connoly and Gerard Butler.
