Ann Richards should be known as the "mother" of the New Texas. She was an extraordinary person who personified wisdom and wit. She brought personality, style, and equality to Texas politics and government and helped to increase the participatory democracy amongst women and minorities.

Ann Richards believed that women were not second class citizens put on this earth to be ONLY beasts of burden for men. Women owe her a lot, and anyone like Anonymous thinks otherwise is a woman-hating fool.
In 1976, Richards ran against and defeated a three-term incumbent on the four-member Travis County, Texas Commissioners' Court; she took 81.4 percent of the vote against Libertarian opponent Laurel Freeman to win re-election in 1980. During this time, her marriage ended, in part because of the strain of politics on the relationship. Richards' drinking became more pronounced, and she sought and completed treatment for alcoholism in 1980. David Richards is a prominent civil rights attorney in California.
In 1976, Ms. Richards defeated a three-term incumbent to become a commissioner in Travis County, which includes Austin. She held the job for four years. She ... began drinking heavily, becoming alcoholic and putting great strain on her marriage, she said later. It ended in divorce. After going into rehabilitation, she stopped drinking in 1980 and later said that the decision to seek help had saved her life and salvaged her political career.

Ann Richards was the living, fire-breathing embodiment of the adage that life begins at 50. But to get there, you have to live through your 20s, 30s and 40s, when the “possibilities” can be overwhelming and the “choices” are often determined by biology.
