LYCOS RETRIEVER
Ann-Margret

RCA (which, of course... had Elvis Presley under contract) seemed interested in promoting a very different Ann-Margret. The label paired her with middle-of-the-road singer John Gary on the duet album David Merrick Presents Hits from His Broadway Shows, released in October 1964 and in the charts for four weeks. And after three straight movie musicals, her film career took a false step with the poorly reviewed melodrama Kitten With a Whip, which also appeared in October 1964. Two months later, she was back in the theaters and the record stores with The Pleasure Seekers, a musical remake of Three Coins in the Fountain with a soundtrack album on which she also appeared.

In March 1966, Ann-Margret and entertainers Chuck Day and Mickey Jones teamed up for a USO tour to entertain U.S. servicemen in remote parts of Vietnam and other parts of Southeast Asia. She still has great affection for the veterans and refers to them as "my gentlemen."[5] Ann-Margret, Day and Jones reunited in November 2005 for an encore of this tour for veterans and troops at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.[6]

Far better known as a film star than a singer, Ann-Margret has recorded constantly throughout her lengthy career. Not a singer of great talent, and not without a bit of ingratiating charm, it is her early-'60s work that holds the most interest for rock fans, in a cheesy sub-girl group sort of fashion.

A warm story about a Vietnam vet who wanted actress Ann-Margret to sign a snapshot he had taken of her when she once performed for troops in Vietnam. He and his wife went to a bookstore where Ann-Margret was autographing books, but an announcement was made that she would be signing books only, not other memorabilia. The vet decided to get in line anyway to at least show her the picture and tell her how much visits like hers meant to troops so far from home. When she saw the photo, tears came to her eyes and she called him one of her "gentlemen from Vietnam" and said she would sign the photo for him. She gave him a kiss and told the crowd how much she appreciated the veterans for what they had done. It was emotional for those in the crowd, but especially so for the vet who later told his wife it had been the first time anyone had thanked him for his service in the Army.
