Ann Blyth: Mildred Pierce
built 237 days ago
Ann Blyth, in the role of Veda Pierce, had previously played a few juvenile roles in innocuous fare like Babes on Swing Street (1944) before she got to sink her teeth into the plum role in Mildred Pierce. She is so convincingly evil, mean-spirited, and obnoxious in the role that her peers nominated her for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Mildred Pierce (Crawford) is a frumpy middle-class housewife who invests every spare cent and waking moment into educating and bettering her two children; teenager Veda (Ann Blyth) and precocious Kay (Jo Anne Marlowe). When her husband Bert (Bruce Bennett) moves on to greener pastures, Mildred has no other option than to fling on the shoulderpads and enter the workforce. Despite her eventual success in opening a chain of restaurants, nothing she ever does or provides is "good enough" for Veda.
In addition to Mildred Pierce’s Michael Curtiz, Blyth ... worked with directors Raoul Walsh ("pretty freewheeling") and Douglas Sirk ("a very introspective person"). Her talent as a songbird is on display in movies shared with "very special friend" and "delight" Donald O'Connor, and she held her own opposite leading men as varied as "dear" Farley Granger and Robert Mitchum, who had "shoulders that went on forever" but also "was very playful."
