Just about everybody agrees that Anita Ekberg -- former Swedish photographer's model -- is one of the world's most glamourous girls. She came to this country in 1951 after being named "Miss Sweden," returned to Stockholm and then came back to take the American cover-girl industry by storm. But Anita hankers for something more.
From All Movie Guide: Junoesque Swedish leading lady Anita Ekberg got her start in the U.S., where she was elected "Miss Sweden" in the Miss Universe pageant. Along with other Miss Universe contestants, Ekberg played an Amazonian extraterrestrial in 1953's Abbott and Costello Go to Mars. She ... displayed her obvious attributes in such Technicolor shows as Artists and Models (1956) and Hollywood or Bust (1957), and proved an apt foil for the leering one-liners of Bob "Cherchez la Femme" Hope in Paris Holiday (1957) and Call Me Bwana (1963). Though never taken completely seriously as an actress, Ekberg was given better opportunities to emote in the Italian films of Federico Fellini, notably as the principal "wish dream" in La Dolce Vita (1961). Anita Ekberg would repeat her La Dolce Vita role in Fellini's 1986 filmic autobiography Intervista. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
The Swedish actress, Anita Ekberg, arrived at the festival yesterday. She has come to Bratislava to present perhaps the most famous of Federico Fellini's films, La Dolce Vita, (29/11, 6 p.m./C1). Although Ekberg's name is primarily connected with this particular director, the actress emphasises the fact that she was already an internationally recognised star when she began working with Fellini. It was far from easy to receive an interview with Anita Ekberg. The actress was obviously suffering from a cold, and stated immediately at the outset that she does not like journalists too much, because at the end of the day, they always write what they want anyway. After her initial hesitation, she finally provided an interview to various journalists, not forgetting to stress that she is "not a diva, but an actress".
In 1950 Anita was urged by her mother to enter the Miss Malmo competition which in turn would lead to the Miss Sweden contest. Anita won both competitions and consequently went to America to try for Miss Universe, not speaking any English, not knowing a single person in the States.
Anita Ekberg The legendary Anita Ekberg form began to change in the late sixties, not necessarily losing its curves, but beginning to expand. Not really bothered by this, Anita posed nude in 1978 and still conserved her glamour image. She appeared the same year in the strange thriller Killer Nun. Aside from playing herself in a great homage from Fellini for Intervista in 1987, nothing much remains memorable from Anita's latter list of films. She still lives in Italy and remain candidly honest about her past.
