Diverse animals Animals are living things. Animals are not plants so they can't make their own food or energy from the light of the sun. Animals have to eat other living things (animals, plants, fungi, etc.) to get energy to live. Many animals live in the world. Some are big and some are small. Some live in water, others live on the ground and some animals can fly.

Animals are a major group of multicellular, eukaryotic organisms of the kingdom Animalia or Metazoa. Their body plan becomes fixed as they develop, usually early on in their development as embryos, although some undergo a process of metamorphosis later on in their life. Most animals are motile - they can move spontaneously and independently. Animals are heterotrophs - they are dependent on other organisms (e.g. plants) for sustenance.
According to a Time/CNN article, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has taken Romney to task since the incident came to light. In the report, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said: “…it is commonsense that any dog who's under extreme stress might show that stress by losing control of his bowels: that alone should have been sufficient indication that the dog was, basically, being tortured."
A disaster relief team from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), based in Massachusetts, arrived in Kabul this past weekend to begin its mission of mercy. The scope of this operation will be staggering. To start, WSPA's animal rescue team has entered the country with more than $10,000 of veterinary medicines to treat injuries and vaccinate animals against disease. Malnutrition, leg injuries and parasites are among the chief concerns for pack animals like donkeys and horses. Many Afghani residents rely on their donkeys, much the same way that Americans rely upon their automobiles. A sick donkey, unable to walk, can spell disaster for families who need to travel hundreds of miles for food and supplies.
Animals in homes with family violence are ... often victims of violence. One study found that animals were abused in 88 percent of the homes in which a child was abused. Another study found that 83 percent of families reported for animal abuse also had children at high risk of abuse or neglect. Although most of the abuse toward the animals came from the parents, about a quarter of abused children abuse animals.

Pain and Distress Report The Animals in Research section is committed to promoting alternatives to the use of animals in product testing as well as in biomedical research and education. Alternatives are scientific methods that accomplish one or more of the "Three Rs": They replace the use of animals in a scientific procedure; they reduce the number of animals used in a procedure; and/or they refine a procedure so the animals experience less pain, suffering or discomfort.
