ANIL Agarwal, the visionary founder and leader of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), passed away on Jan 2, 2002, after a seven-year battle against cancer. Anil Agarwal, who once visited and lectured on environmental issues in Pakistan in 1990, was famous as an eminent third world thinker for his research work on global environmental issues. He challenged western based analysis of blaming southern countries for contributing to global warming in climate change conventions perspective, with his scientific reasoning and asked them to pay for their unsustainable consumption and production pattern that has damaged the global environment.

It is this combination of the analytical powers of a scientist (he was an IIT graduate) and the social concern of an activist that Agarwal combined in his work. Environment, he stated, was not just about pretty trees and tigers, but a system of governance. Nothing was beyond its ken, from human defecation to remote sensing (one of his favourite images was that of a satellite picture of Ramnathapuram district, showing hundreds of ancient storage tanks now in an advanced state of decay).

Agarwal says he is more conscious of protecting the environment now. “At our Kalahandi bauxite mines in Orissa, locals are protecting us because we provided livelihood to more than 1,000 people and offered them a decent life.” He says he would convert Sesa Goa’s mines into greenery once he finishes with them and would provide livelihood to locals.
