Anguilla: Anguilla Act
built 627 days ago
Anguilla has few natural resources, and the economy depends heavily on luxury tourism, offshore banking, lobster fishing, and remittances from emigrants. Increased activity in the tourism industry, which has spurred the growth of the construction sector, has contributed to economic growth. Anguillan officials have put substantial effort into developing the offshore financial sector, which is small, but growing. In the medium term, prospects for the economy will depend largely on the tourism sector and, therefore, on revived income growth in the industrialized nations as well as on favorable weather conditions.
Using the Latest technology, ACORN (Anguilla’s Commercial Online Registration Network) allows companies to be incorporated instantly from anywhere in the world, 24-hours a day, 365 days a year. ACORN ... enables all other corporate registration activities and filings permitted under the relevant legislation to be undertaken online.
Anguilla was first colonized in 1650 by English settlers from St. Christopher (St. Kitts) and has since remained a British territory. It was originally part of the West Indies Associated States as a component of the St. Kitts–Nevis-Anguilla Federation. In 1967, Anguilla declared its independence from the federation but Britain did not recognize this action. In Feb. 1969, Anguilla voted to cut all ties with Britain and become an independent republic. In March, Britain landed troops on the island and, on March 30, a truce was signed.

Anguilla was governed as part of St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla from the early 18th Century. Anguilla became a separate dependency with its own internal self-government following a British intervention to end two years of rebellion. This was formalized with the Anguilla Act of 1980. Today, Anguilla is a dependency of the United Kingdom and is flourishing with its renewed direction toward a better tourist industry. Never in Anguilla history has there been a more economic boom. The beautiful beaches and breath-takingly blue waters ensure that people will flock to the island for years to come.
Just north of St. Martin lies the small Caribbean Island of Anguilla. Only 35 square miles with a population of less than 12,000, Anguilla is proudly known for its traditions, festivals, sandy beaches and most of all, its friendly people. With an average temperature is about 80F this island is truly a tropical escape.

In March 1969, after the UK parliamentary under-secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth affairs, William Whitlock, had been ejected, UK security forces occupied Anguilla, and the UK government appointed a commissioner. Following negotiations, agreement was reached, and the UK Parliament’s Anguilla Act (July 1971) provided for a formal separation of Anguilla when St Kitts and Nevis became independent. In December 1980, Anguilla was formally separated and reverted to the status of a UK dependent territory.
