Angola: Luanda Place
built 646 days ago
Luanda, the capital of Angola, is the country's largest city and second busiest seaport. Founded in 1576 by Paulo Dias de Novais, it became the administrative centre of the colony in 1627 and was a major outlet for slave traffic to Brazil.

ph©to: Africa Focus Visitors to Angola can view and purchase Angolan art pieces at the numerous art galleries that are becoming more and more commonplace in Luanda. Kimbanda masks are a specific product of Angola. These masks are difficult to buy if they're used for kimbanda (the cult on which Brazilian Umbanda was based).
Map of Africa Parts of Angola were almost depopulated in the process. Since Angolans were the first of the large African groups in Brazil, they came into contact with the Amerindians and caboclos, people of Portuguese-Amerindian descent. To this day in Brazil, one often finds Angolan and Amerindian elements closely associated, as in the expression caboclos de Aruanda, literally Indians from Luanda, the capital of Angola. In Afro-Brazilian religious contexts, a caboclo is the spirit of a dead Indian, and Aruanda means something like "spiritland."

Although they failed to discover the gold and other precious metals they were seeking, the Portuguese found in Angola an excellent source of slaves for their colony in Brazil. Portuguese colonization of Angola began in 1575, when a permanent base was established at Luanda. By this time the Mbundu kingdom had established itself in central Angola. After several attempts at subjugation, Portuguese troops finally broke the back of the kingdom in 1902, when the Bié Plateau was captured. Construction of the Benguela railroad followed, and white settlers arrived in the Angolan highlands.
