Both Amanda Peet and Angelina Jolie have new projects in the works in which they play federal agents. Peet has signed on to join the cast of the second X-Files feature, while Jolie will be starring in a film based on real-life super-spy Kathi Lynn Austin.

With her new-found prominence, Jolie began to get in-depth attention from the press. Numerous aspects of her controversial personal life became news. Jolie divorced her Hackers (1995) co-star Jonny Lee Miller and, in 2000, she married her Pushing Tin (1999) co-star Billy Bob Thornton. Jolie had now become the fifth wife of a man twenty years her senior. At her wedding to Miller, she had displayed her husband's name on the back of her shirt painted in her own blood. During her marriage to Thornton, the spouses each wore a vial of the other's blood around their necks.

Jolie then starred alongside Antonio Banderas as the mail-order bride Julia Russell in Original Sin, a thriller based on the novel Waltz into Darkness by Cornell Woolrich. The film was a major critical failure, with The New York Times noting, "The story plunges more precipitously than Ms. Jolie's neckline."[32] In 2002, she played Lanie Kerrigan in Life or Something Like It, a film about an ambitious TV reporter who is told that she will die in a week. The film was poorly received by critics, though Jolie's performance received positive reviews. CNN's Paul Clinton wrote, "Jolie is excellent in her role. Despite some of the ludicrous plot points in the middle of the film, this Academy Award-winning actress is exceedingly believable in her journey towards self-discovery and the true meaning of fulfilling life."[33]

After their parent's divorce in 1976, their mother raised one-year-old Jolie and older brother James in Palisades, New York. Once contemplating owning a funeral business, Jolie instead followed her acting heritage and attended the Lee Stratsberg Theater Institute when she was 11 years old. Later she attended night classes at New York University, majored in Film, but later dropped out in order to pursue her acting career.
