Angband: Games
built 265 days ago
The evil and terrifying uplink to your new robot killer. Angband is a program for many platforms including Windows, Linux and the other ones that no one has ever heard of. While many people think it is a simple roguelike game, the actual truth is far more sinister. When you play it, you are actually connecting to a robot in the real world and sending it out to massacre hundreds upon hundreds of innocent people, some of whom may have done nothing more serious than huff the occasional kitten or invent a new Chuck Norris joke. Actually, that last one is heinous. You're justified with that one.
Angband is the oldest currently-maintained representative of one of two major lines of roguelikes, the other being Hack-like games. While this line begins with Moria, which spawned numerous variants, Angband essentially took up Moria's niche in the gaming ecology. The tendency of Angband variants' names to be suffixed with "band" has resulted in the genre characterized by Angband being referred to as the *bands.
Angband has an active community, split mostly between the forums and the newsgroup. If you enjoy the game, you might want to take a look, as hints and tips are often shared, and those asking for advice are welcome.

Maybe because of this and the fact that Angband has very clean source code compared to most other roguelike games, Angband has spawned more variants than any other roguelike game. The number of variants at the moment is about 20 and it keeps growing.

Angband follows the same behavior when a character dies as many of the other rogue-like games. When a character dies, that's it, game over. Information on monsters that the character has seen (monster memory) is retained, but the player must start again. This is in contrast to most fantasy role-playing computer games that let you restore your game from a savefile if you die. Angband ... differs from most commercial games in that there is no puzzle solving as such.
Both Angband and NetHack are readily available on the Internet. Even if they were not, the license allows anyone with a copy to put the games on a server and begin distributing them over the Internet. In practice, anyone who sells Angband or NetHack must compete against this gratis redistribution. In practice, this means that anyone can easily avoid paying for NetHack if they want.
