Anemia: Hemoglobin
built 635 days ago
Anemia of Chronic Disease (ACD) is a condition of impaired iron utilization where functional iron (hemoglobin) is low but tissue iron (such as in storage) is normal or high. ACD is seen in a wide range of chronic malignant, autoimmune, leukemic, inflammatory, and infectious disease conditions.
Anemia drugs in the class include Amgen’s Epogen and Aranesp, and Johnson & Johnson’s Procrit. The drugs raise the level of the oxygen-carrying protein hemoglobin (pictured, above left) in the blood and reduce the need for transfusions. J&J told the Times the rebates don’t aim to cause doctors to prescribe more of its drug but instead “reflect intense competition” in the market. Amgen said rebates are a normal commercial practice and that the company’s promotion of its drugs has been proper.

Anemia is usually characterized by a hemoglobin level of <14 g/dL in men and <12 g/dL in women. In people with HIV infection, anemia has been linked to poor quality of life and decreased survival, and correction of anemia can improve these parameters.
