Anemia: Bleeding
built 635 days ago
Anemia is a common side effect of interferon and ribavirin, the two drugs used to treat hepatitis C infection. Although both interferon and ribavirin contribute to the anemia, dose reduction of just the ribavirin is a common practice. Studies have shown... that adequate dosing of ribavirin is important in attacking hepatitis C, and that a reduction in the ribavirin dose before the 20th week of therapy is often associated with a poor response to treatment. (See previous Viewpoint: Insights from retreatment of non-responders of interferon based therapies with pegylated interferon and ribavirin).

Anemia is the most common disorder of the blood. There are several kinds of anemia, produced by a variety of underlying causes. Anemia can be classified in a variety of ways, based on the morphology of RBCs, underlying etiologic mechanisms, and discernible clinical spectra, to mention a few.

Anemia is particularly serious in cancer patients. In people with many common cancers, the presence of anemia is associated with a shorter survival time. Anemia may worsen the toxicity of chemotherapy in elderly cancer patients.

Anemia may exacerbate or cause other medical problems. For example, anemia requires the heart to work harder and this additional stress to the heart could cause a heart attack in patients with preexisting heart disease.

Anemia is defined by the level of HGB. Most health care providers agree that HGB levels below 6.5 indicate life-threatening anemia. Normal levels are at least 12 for women and at least 14 for men.

Anemia is said to occur when the concentration of haemoglobin falls below that specified as normal for the individual's age and sex. Athletes who subject themselves to prolonged, strenuous exertion (for example, by daily endurance training) may develop a degree of anemia.
