Andy Kaufman: Worlds
built 190 days ago
Andy Kaufman and Bill Hicks worked towards creating something that was greater than comedy, and went further than entertainment. They wanted to see a world transmogrified through their work. Though their methods were opposite - Kaufman magically created illusions, Hicks gleefully destroyed them - their mission was the same: to reveal the world as a series of frames. It was a mission that could easily be placed next to transcendental meditation in its effects. It isn't a coincidence that they found salvation, for a time, in alternative healing.

It was around this time that Kaufman began approaching well-known wrestling promoters across the country with the idea of running an angle involving him and a legitimate (male) professional wrestling superstar. Somewhat surprisingly, the controversial entertainer found few takers within the world of wrestling, perhaps because some felt his Inter-Gender championship was a mockery of (as opposed to a tribute to) the "sport." Indeed, numerous big time promoters were contacted, including Vince McMahon, Sr., yet no established territory was interested in working with Kaufman, despite his celebrity status. However, when word of his intentions reached Memphis promoter/wrestler Jerry Lawler and his partner Jerry Jarrett, they immediately saw great potential in the Inter-Gender champion's proposal and quickly agreed to work with the eccentric performer.

Andy loved Elvis Presley. By the time he was attending Great Neck North High School, Andy's Elvis impression was already finely tuned. In fact, Andy imitated Elvis before imitating Elvis became a world-wide business. Andy once hitchhiked to Las Vegas to meet Presley. Although Andy's voice wasn't the best, he captured the legendary Elvis moves and mannerisms better than anyone. Elvis considered Andy's impersonation of him as by far his favorite.

Kaufman grew up admiring professional wrestlers and the world in which they perform. Inspired by the theatricality of kayfabe, the staged nature of the sport, and his own tendency to form elaborate hoaxes, Kaufman began wrestling women during his act and was the self-proclaimed "Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World," taking on an aggressive and ridiculous personality based upon the characters invented by professional wrestlers. He offered a $1,000 reward to any woman who could pin him.

Once again, Kaufman was a smart signing, even to the casual fan, they know who Kaufman is so he’ll be a seller. Besides even with the little time that he spent in Memphis, Kaufman turned the wrestling world on it’s head so he’s more worthy than others like Johnny Rods and Tank Abbott.
