Andy Kaufman: Foreign Man
built 229 days ago
In all, Andy Kaufman spent the following three days in Memphis lying in traction, the victim of an injured cervical vertebrae. While his x-rays did not indicate that he had broken his neck, injuries of this type can often be quite ambiguous and his doctors, trained professionals, were all reportedly convinced that the man's neck had suffered a severe trauma.

Zehme uses parcels of Kaufman's voluminous writings and candid interviews with Kaufman's family and closest friends to frame key episodes in his life. The book avoids much of the speculation and romanticism of others who have penned articles, websites, and books on Kaufman. In Lost in the Funhouse Zehme reveals that Kaufman's bag of tricks and illusions was fully developed in his teenage years -- so much for claims by others who have been taking credit for many of Kaufman's signature achievements. Andy's nightclub performances, his Carnegie Hall show, and both TV specials (for ABC and PBS) were adult variations of the birthday-party shows he gave for small neighborhood children when he was in his early teens, in which he showed movies on the wall, lip-synched to songs, performed magic tricks and led sing-alongs of "The Cow Goes Moo" and other favorites. (Even his milk-and-cookies idea was something Kaufman thought of in college.)

According to Mike Wallace, Elvis liked Andy the best. Andy's impression of Elvis was reverential. A young Kaufman had, after all, written a book about Elvis, modestly titled God, hitchhiked to Las Vegas, camped out in the basement pantry of the casino where Presley was performing, and ambushed the King en route to his private elevator to the penthouse. Kaufman chittered and waved the copy of his handwritten manuscript. The King nodded, smiled, and offered his blessing. Years later, on a private tour of Graceland, Kaufman discovered - among Elvis's videos - a stash of Kaufman tapes.

The official website of the film calls Kaufman eccentric, innovative, enigmatic, and 'a master manipulator.' But Kaufman's entire life was built around one word - fun. His eccentricities, paradoxes and manipulations all existed for the purpose of having fun. And 'fun' is an Ansir Scintillator word. No personality on earth is more capable of creating or having fun like them.
