Bob Zmuda, Andy's writer, best friend, author of Andy Kaufman Revealed: Budd Friedman would use Gatsby to empty out the club at the end of the night. When there were just people hanging out and they're not buying any more drinks, he'd sic Andy on em.

Andy Kaufman (right) in the film God Told Me To Andy Kaufman allegedly told many people—including Bob Zmuda — that he wished to fake his own death prior to his actual death. This has caused some fans to believe Kaufman is still alive.[23] A screenplay Kaufman was working on at the time of his death was about a character who claimed to have lung cancer and faked his death.
On May 16th, a huge Andy Kaufman tribute was staged at the House of Blues in honor of the 20th anniversary of Andy's death. At the urging of Andy's best friend Bob Zmuda, Wally was responsible for setting up the Andy Kaufman memorabilia exhibit which was a part of the commemoration. As a life-long Andy fan, Wally was honored to have such an awesome responsibility and worked hard to achieve the final product. CLICK HERE for more details of the show and pictures!
The designers of the site needed content and showed up at Bob Zmuda's first book signing of Andy Kaufman Revealed prepared with a video camera. They later wrote that it was "boring as dirt", except for a clown that managed to get himself thrown out. They went with the clown angle. On their page of video clips they had streaming video of Andy playing bongos and Bob at the book signing. Sandwiched between these two was footage of F'Ugly th3 Kl*wn. This odd juxtaposition kindled forum wildfire.

[One] partly facetious theory making the rounds on the Internet is that Kaufman got plastic surgery to dramatically alter his appearance and is a current-day comedian or celebrity. Usually the celebrity mentioned is Jim Carrey, who starred in Man on the Moon, the 1999 film about Kaufman's life that was directed by Milos Forman. Carrey is a long-time fan of Kaufman's and fought hard for the role, and even owns Kaufman's conga drums. (Also interestingly, he and Kaufman share the same birthday: January 17th.) Additionally, Carrey's acting was considered uncannily close to the way Kaufman was normally, even according to Kaufman's friend Bob Zmuda. (Incidentally, Zmuda was in Batman Forever, which co-starred Carrey.) To "support" this theory, parallels are often drawn from Kaufman's life to Carrey's movies, which include The Majestic, in which Carrey plays a man who loses his memory and lives another person's life, and Me, Myself, and Irene, in which Carrey plays the white father of three African-American males. However, even if one were to discount Carrey's childhood as a fabrication, he first emerged as an actor in 1983, which is a year too early.

Bob Zmuda: One part of the Taxi deal was that Andy would get his own one-hour special, and he could choose his own guests. He said, oh, I’ll get the first TV star. Howdy Doody. Howdy was his idol. The night before the rehearsal, Andy couldn’t sleep. He was so nervous.
