Andy Griffith's first credited role was in 1953 on the United States Steel hours presentation of No Time For Sergeants. Andy Griffith later (in 1958) starred in the movie of the same name. The Andy Griffith Show spinoff, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. was based on No Time For Sergeants. (edit)

In 1955, Griffith debuted on Broadway in the play No Time For Sergeants and was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance. He reprised this role on television and in the movies in 1958 and ... starred in the movies, A Face in the Crowd and Onionhead.
Firmness — and funny business — helped Griffith land that first film role in A Face in the Crowd. Elia Kazan, who was slated to direct the picture, heard about Griffith from another actor; he summoned Griffith to New York's legendary Gallagher's steak house and put him through a kind of informal audition — at which Griffith took a certain television evangelist as his model and seized the moment, as it were.

Producer Michael Roiff said he and Shelly couldn't believe their good fortune at landing Griffith for the role. "We were so excited about the performance he was delivering," Roiff said. "In the editing room, putting scenes together, she and I would just look at each other and think, 'How did we get so lucky?' "
