Other than The Andy Griffith Show's (TAGS) starring roles, few television viewers were familiar with the show's supporting cast. That... soon changed. In addition to Jim Nabor's phenomenal success with Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., many famous stars today were originally noticed in the small town of "Mayberry, North Carolina."

The basic setting of The Andy Griffith Show remained constant throughout most of its seven-and-a-half years on television, despite a few cast changes here and there. Andy Taylor was the sheriff of Mayberry, within Mayberry County, North Carolina. He was a widower, raising his son Opie with the aid of his Aunt Bea (who came in during the first episode). Andy's second-in-command was Barney Fife, a thin, nervous, but dedicated lawman who often took a more hardline approach to the law than did the more laid-back Andy. Other townsfolk included befuddled barber Floyd, the lovable town drunk Otis, greasemonkey Gomer Pyle, and Gomer's goofy cousin Goober.

Andy Griffith On The Andy Griffith Show, Griffith played Andy Taylor, an amiable sheriff in the quiet Southern town of Mayberry. There was little crime for the sheriff to deal with, so most episodes revolved around Andy and his son Opie (Ron Howard), his Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier), and his bumbling deputy Barney Fife (Knotts). The show ran eight seasons, and spent all that time in the top ten, and it is now considered one of the best sitcoms of all time. Most of the Mayberry settings and several of its characters were based on Griffith's real-life home town, Mt. Airy, North Carolina. In one episode, the fictional Andy mentions once having a crush on a schoolgirl named Barbara Edwards. She was Griffith's wife.

The Andy Griffith Show was based around widowed Sheriff Andy Taylor, raising his young son Opie (Ron Howard) in the rural North Carolina town of Mayberry. Sheriff Taylor was ... the town's justice of the peace dispensing summary judgments. He apparently had jurisdiction in the surrounding county as well.
