Andy Garcia Picture Synopsis: Gary Starke (Andy Garcia) was an orphan living on the streets at 13 who grew up to preside over a crew of street hustlers as the grand master of ticket scalpers. Charming, savvy, and honorable, Gary seems beloved by everyone until Linda (Andie MacDowell), the love of his life, dumps him. Tired ofRead More

Pure man Andy Garcia dedicates himself to art. Money and fame is not what he pursues. He refuses to do nude scenes and doesn't choose roles for box-office potential. He rejected roles of "blockbuster" movies which could have turned him into mega-star. Like gold, shining and heavy, Garcia is a quiet star. He never floats around to seek fame.

In Los Angeles, Garcia’s early acting prospects were slim. He had a small apartment and worked different jobs while taking acting classes. Garcia and Marivi Larido were married in the fall of 1982, but his early appearances in film and television were frustrating, as he was repeatedly typecast in bit parts. Things began to change when he managed to appear several times as a menacing gang presence on NBC’s popular drama “Hill Street Blues” (1981-87) through 1984. That same year, the couple had their first daughter, Dominik, and his onscreen visibility received a huge boost when he was cast as Miami homicide detective Ray Martinez in the big screen serial killer drama, “The Burning Season” (1985). His cool, edgy appearance turned some heads in casting circles and Garcia soon adopted a long-haired look, taking up with the other side of the law as the drug dealing Angel Maldonado of “8 Million Ways to Die” (1986).

In addition to playing the lead and directing the film, Garcia was one of the producers and scored the original music. To get the film made, he worked through his CineSon Productions along with Frank Mancuso Jr. and in association with Crescent Drive Pictures, which ... financed the production. Financier Tom Gores, chairman of global investment firm Platinum Equity, and Johnny O. Lopez served as executive producers.

It was not until he was cast as a drug kingpin in Hal Ashby's 8 Million Ways to Die (1985) that Garcia's career really took off. After turning in strong roles in both The Untouchables (1987) and Stand and Deliver (1988), he achieved an additional degree of stardom when he was cast as Michael Corleone's hot-headed nephew in The Godfather Part III (1990), a role for which he earned Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. The range of Garcia's talents was impressive enough for screenwriter Henry Bean to write the script for the 1990 police-corruption drama Internal Affairs with the actor specifically in mind. But after several years of on-the-edge characters, Garcia softened his screen image as the too-good-to-be-true husband of an alcoholic (Meg Ryan) in When a Man Loves a Woman (1994).
