Andy Garcia: Acting
built 225 days ago
Andy Garcia: The defensive effort is key. There's no excuse for lacking effort, except exhaustion. And if you've got no legs, tell your coach: "I've got no legs, get me out of the game." No matter who it is. You have to be able to sacrifice yourself and say, "I can't play, I've got no legs."

In 1983 Garcia made his film debut in Blue Skies Again, a movie about baseball. That was followed in 1984 with The Mean Season, while in 1985 Garcia appeared in Eight Million Ways To Die. His big break came in 1987 when he landed a significant role in the blockbuster film The Untouchables, which starred Kevin Costner. Garcia, who played a cop-turned-government agent in the film, received his first critical acclaim for acting. The next year, he appeared in Blood Money: The Story of Clinton and Nadine, an original HBO film. He ... appeared in American Roulette, a spy thriller, and Stand and Deliver.

It’s not just lip service to hear Garcia talk about how his life revolves around his family. He’s been married to Marivi Lorido Garcia since 1982. The couple has three daughters, Dominik, Daniella and Alessandra, and a little boy, Andrés, who turned two in January. Only twice in the last 20 years has he been away from them for longer than five days. Once was for Black Rain, when Maria was pregnant with their second daughter and he spent four weeks in Japan filming the thriller with Michael Douglas; the other time was last summer, when he shot a film about Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani in Romania. The family had actually planned to join him there after Alessandra’s elementary school graduation, but his eldest daughter caught mononucleosis.

Garcia's good looks and athletic ability made him a popular student in high school. In his senior year he endured a bout of mononucleosis and hepatitis. This kept him bedridden and forced him to sit out a promising basketball season. During this time he caught a different kind of bug. The acting bug. Garcia recalls, "From then on, acting was like a hunger in the pit of my stomach."

Garcia's niece Jackie was the longtime girlfriend of the late Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor, who was shot by intruders in their Miami-area home on November 26, 2007 and who died from his wounds on November 27, 2007. The two were home with their 18-month old daughter Jackie when the incident took place. Garcia attended Taylor's funeral, and released a statement to the Miami Herald calling Taylor a hero for saving the life of his niece and her child.[7]
