It isn't easy for Andy Dick to come up with fresh new ways to offend, but somehow he keeps managing. He did it again -- albeit in a seemingly leg-pulling way -- over the weekend at The Improv in Hollywood when he was moved to shout at the audience, "You're all a bunch of niggers!". It was supposed to be ironic or something, given the neverending Michael Richards brouhaha. But apparently this incident was met with less than the intended good humor, inspiring Dick to issue an apology this week through his publicist:

This isn't Dick's first drug-related offense. In 1999, he asked a Los Angeles judge to consider him for a yearlong drug diversion program that could clear him of drug charges following his arrest the previous year, when his car hit a telephone pole near the Hollywood Bowl.

On May 15, 1999, Dick drove his car into a telephone pole in Hollywood. He was charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs and hit-and-run driving. He later pleaded guilty to felony cocaine possession and two other misdemeanor charges: marijuana possession and possession of "a smoking device." After Dick completed an 18-month drug diversion program, a judge dismissed the felony and misdemeanor drug charges against him.

In private, Dick is thoughtful, thankful, and serious about his spiritual search. He claims he's helped in this by his current co-stars Zachary Levi and Sherri Shepherd, both well-known in Hollywood's Christian circles. Called a comedic "saving grace" in a recent review, Dick appears to be looking for some grace himself. Steven Lawson interviewed him on the set recently.
