Andrew Johnson: Tennessee Democrats
built 644 days ago
When Andrew Johnson returned home to Greenville, Tennessee in 1869 one of the first things the family did was to redecorate. Included in that redecoration was wallpaper for the formal rooms, the bedrooms and the central hall. Through the years the original wallpapers were destroyed. Thus, with no original wallpaper fragments to reproduce, documented patterns appropriate to the the period were selected. All the wallpapers used during this restoration came from Carter & Co located in Califorinia.
Andrew Johnson Andrew Johnson left office embittered, riding out of the capital without even speaking to his successor on Inauguration Day. He was defeated in a House election in 1872. When he returned to the Senate in 1875, only 13 of the 35 senators who had voted for his impeachment remained. One of them, Oliver P. Morton of Indiana, shook his hand in a gesture of reconciliation. Three months later, on vacation at his daughter's home in Tennessee, Johnson collapsed from a stroke. He requested that he be buried with a copy of the Constitution as a pillow and the Stars and Stripes for his shroud.

Andrew Johnson was born in Rayleigh, North Carolina on 29th December, 1808. His father, a porter in an local inn, died when Johnson was only three years old. Too poor to go to school, Johnson became an apprentice tailor at fourteen. Three years later he opened his own shop in Greeneville, Tennessee.
Andrew Johnson Born to poor and illiterate parents, Andrew Johnson was indentured to a tailor to learn a trade. At age 18, Johnson moved to Tennessee, opened his own tailor shop, and soon could afford both a house and a spouse.
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is open daily and there is no charge to tour the museum. There is a $2 admission fee... to tour the Andrew Johnson Home for those age 18 and above. Special discounts are available for children and groups. In spite of the recent attention, the historic site is traditionally one of the most visited places in East Tennessee.
After Andrew's father died, his mother and her new husband apprenticed fourteen-year-old Andrew and his older brother William to a local tailor. After serving a number of years in this trade, the boys ran away for several years, dodging rewards for their capture placed by their former employer. Andrew later returned to his mother, and the entire family moved west to Greeneville, Tennessee, where young Andrew set up shop as a tailor and met his wife, Eliza McCardle. Eliza educated Andrew and helped him make wise investments in town real estate and farmlands. When Johnson reached the White House, First Lady Eliza Johnson was a semi-invalid suffering from tuberculosis during her husband's term in office. She only made two public appearances during her entire stay in the executive mansion.
