Andrew Johnson: Presidents
built 231 days ago
Although a large number of senators believed that Johnson was guilty of the charges, they disliked the idea of Benjamin Wade becoming the next president. Wade, who believed in women's suffrage and trade union rights, was considered by many members of the Republican Party as being an extreme radical. James Garfield warned that Wade was "a man of violent passions, extreme opinions and narrow views who was surrounded by the worst and most violent elements in the Republican Party."
In 1997 Ford participated in "The Presidents' Summit on America's Future," along with former presidents Bush and Carter, and President Clinton, as well as General Colin Powell, and former first ladies Nancy Reagan and Lady Bird Johnson. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss volunteerism and community service, and marked the first occasion when living former presidents convened on a domestic policy.

Some sources refer to Andrew Johnson having Baptist parents. Of all U.S. presidents... many historians consider Johnson the least religious, and the president who was least affiliated with any religious group or identifiable religious philosophy.

General William T. Sherman [US] learns of President Johnson's rejection of his surrender terms to Joe Johnston. General Grant, who personally delivered the message, orders Sherman to commence operations against Johnson within 48 hours. Sherman is incensed but obeys orders.
The Avenger is ostensibly about Johnson's first forty-five days in office but this is silly. A historian has to spend a little time on the where and the how and the when, both before and after the main drama. This is, rather, a story of how Johnson grew up, how he got started in politics, how he got pulled into being Vice-President. And how he blew it, creating a firestorm of loathing for his presidency; surviving impeachment by one vote; being regarded, down to our own time, as one of the worst presidents in the line of a nation's presidents --- relegated by historians to the level of Warren G. Harding, Herbert Hoover, and the present incumbent.
