On February 24,1868 a revolution impeachment was passed by the committee and the House of Representatives which was appointed to " report articles of impeachment " against president Andrew Johnson. Johnson was acquitted impeachment charges. He was ... charged with conspiring against President Lincoln before he was assassinated. He was able to survive that charge against him because Lincoln and him were good friends and he was a loyal supported to him and he had nothing to do with his death.

Johnson was sworn in as President of the United States on April 15 1865, upon the death of Lincoln that morning. He was the first Vice President to succeed to the U.S. Presidency upon the assassination of a President and the sixth Vice president to become a President.

After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Johnson's presidential years were marred by impeachment proceedings related to his Reconstruction policies after the Civil War. He was cleared by a single vote. After his death in 1869, Johnson's wishes were fulfilled when his body was wrapped in the American flag with his head resting on a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

From 1862-1864, Johnson served as the military governor of Tennessee. He insured that the State remained under Federal control. In June of 1864 Lincoln prevailed on the delegates to the Republican convention to nominate Johnson for the role of Vice President.

In 1864 the Republicans, hoping to attract support from Unionist Democrats, nominated Johnson for vice president. When Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, heavy responsibilities fell upon Johnson. The new president indicated that he would impose severe punishment on "traitors," but his actual policy during 1865 was surprisingly lenient. He extended amnesty to all but the most prominent and wealthy Confederates and provided for the election (by white voters only) of delegates to the conventions to draw up new Southern state constitutions. Subsequently, Johnson granted thousands of pardons to Southerners exempted from the general amnesty.

Abraham Lincoln was killed by a sniper on July 12, 1864 while inspecting the ramparts at Fort Stevens north of Washington, DC Hamlin became president, and Johnson was sidelined. Shortly after Lincoln's death, Johnson could do nothing but glare up at Hamlin from the audience as Hamlin was inauguarated.
