Andrew Jackson proved himself to be an able and daring soldier more than once in his life. You may remember, if you have read your history, that in 1813 or 1814 the Creek Indians and other Indians of the North rose in arms. At this time, you may remember, the United States had its second war with England. One of the plans of the British was to capture New Orleans, which, as you know, is an important city situated at the mouth of the Mississippi River. They thought, if they once got possession of this, it would be easy to march up the Mississippi Valley and take possession of the western country. Andrew Jackson's success with the Indians had made him very popular, and he was appointed a general and ordered to fight the British. He collected a force of soldiers with which to march to New Orleans and defend it against the British soldiers.
Andrew Jackson was a pragmatic leader who worked within the patronage-oriented political system that existed then. He was much more focused on domestic politics than foreign policy. Though he could use force — Jackson became a national hero when he defeated the British at New Orleans during the War of 1812 — he was a consummate diplomat and skilled negotiator. He was one of the most skillful political leaders of his generation and is credited with reviving the two-party system in this country. Personally, he was boisterous and fiercely jealous of his honor. He engaged in brawls, and in a duel killed a man who insulted his wife.

Andrew Jackson Davis 1826-1910, American spiritualist, b. Blooming Grove, N.Y. He became a professional clairvoyant, known as the "Poughkeepsie Seer," after being mesmerized in 1843. He was popular among followers of abolitionist, feminist, and temperance movements. Influenced by the ideas of Swedish philosopher Emmanuel Swedenborg , Davis was one of the first American spiritualists to envision the potential of spiritual naturalism to achieve social reform. His writings include The Principle of Nature (1847) and The Harmonial Man (1853).
During the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson led two thousand men against the Creek Indians. The Creeks had allied themselves with the British, hoping that with British assistance, they could stop American expansion westward. Jackson forced the Creeks to cede approximately 23 million acres of land to the United States. During 1814, Jackson captured Pensacola, Florida, from British soldiers, and in 1815, he successfully defended New Orleans from a British attack. The British had hoped to capture New Orleans so that they could seize the crops and products sent to New Orleans for shipment to the East Coast of the United States.
