built 226 days ago
Andrew Jackson taking the bank head on at its own game: chinese checkers. Andrew Jackson's greatest presidential triumph was having his face on $20 bill. Though he initially requested to pose for the portrait holding up a wad of bills and wearing a gold necklace with the the word "Ca$hmoney" on it, his cabinet feared this might offend the Southern States and so advised him to take a more conservative approach on the bill.
NC birthplace Andrew Jackson was born in the Waxhaw area of the Carolinas. His mother was visiting with her sisters at the time, and no one knows for sure which sister's house was the actual birthplace. Both homes were near the NC-SC border, one on each side of the line, by current reckoning, anyway. The markers pictured above are at the two most popular Jackson birth sites. Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in the Waxhaw settlement on what was then the frontier of South Carolina. His parents, Andrew and Elizabeth (Hutchinson) Jackson, were immigrants from Northern Ireland. Young Jackson's father had died a few days before his birth, and he was raised, with two older brothers, by his widowed mother, who lived with relatives. He acquired some schooling and grew up a tall, lanky boy with reddish sandy hair and a quick temper.

Jackson’s Scotch-Irish parents, Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson, emigrated to America from northern Ireland in 1765. At this time they had two sons, Hugh and Robert. The elder Jackson took up farming in the backwoods Waxhaw settlement on the border between North and South Carolina. He died in 1767. A few days later, on March 15, Andrew was born. The widow Jackson moved her family into the home of a nearby relative, James Crawford, where Andrew spent his boyhood.

His father died a few months before he was born. Encouraged by his mother to enter the ministry, Jackson obtained a modest education and taught school for a brief time. The Revolutionary War interrupted his education, and Jackson volunteered his services to the American cause. In 1779 his brother Hugh died from war injuries. In 1781 his other sibling, Robert, died of smallpox, which he and Jackson had contracted while British prisoners of war at Camden, South Carolina.
