Andrew Jackson: American Indians
built 191 days ago
Andrew Jackson, surrounded by myth and image, is a compact symbol representing the ideology of an entire generation. Jackson exemplified the common man, the farmer politician, military prowess and democracy for his time. His name and his philosophy define an age in American history. Andrew Jackson's glorification was a direct result of the desires and anxieties of society. His image was disseminated through society by the rhetoric of his day and later altered through time in the collective memory of America.
Andrew Jackson knew that a Central bank improved the fortunes of an "elite circle" of commercial and industrial bankers at the expense of hard working Americans. He was proven right, when during his administration, the U.S. Government was, for the first, and so far the only time, debt free.

Jackson's foreign policy was marked by firm defense of American interests in forcing the French government to pay long-overdue spoliation claims and reopening the British West Indian trade. Although personally sympathetic to the American-organized rebellion of Texas against Mexico, Jackson took a cautious stance on Texan independence. He was reluctant to split the Democratic party in a domestic controversy over the expansion of slavery or to go to war with Mexico. Jackson did not recognize the Lone Star Republic until the day before he left office in 1837; he left the troublesome problem of Texas annexation to his successors.

Jackson was equally successful in foreign affairs. In 1830 a long dispute with Britain was ended with the reopening of British West Indian ports to American commerce. France was brought to heel in 1836 after resisting payment of spoliation claims dating from 1815, and in 1837, Jackson formally recognized the independence of Texas, although he resisted attempts at annexation to avoid splitting the Democratic party on the slavery question.

THE familiar labels "The Age of Jackson" and "Jacksonian Democracy" identify Andrew Jackson with the era in which he lived and with the advancement of political democracy. This honor may exaggerate his importance, but it ... acknowledges the important truth that Jackson significantly contributed to shaping the American nation and its politics. Just as contemporaneous artists so often depicted him astride his horse overseeing the battlefield, Jackson bestrode some of the key currents of nineteenth-century American political life.
